How often should the equipment be inspected?

University and college fitness equipment are constantly in use. This equipment receives many hours of activity. Consequently, the more usage of fitness equipment receives, the more likely it is to wear down, which calls for repairs. Regular inspection and repair of the various fitness equipment will increase the durability of the equipment and saves money that could be used to purchase new equipment.

Fitness equipment repairs can either be mechanical, electrical, mixed, or both. Outlined below are some of the common fitness equipment repairs for colleges and universities.

  • Treadmill- they require both mechanical and electrical repairs. Mechanical repairs mainly involve the walkbelt and deck friction. Walkbelt slippage and excess and unusual noise indicate that the walkbelt requires some repairs.  Treadmill lubrication can help reduce the frequency of mechanical issues and repairs.  The primary electrical repair for the treadmill is the lower board burn which results from amperage overload.
  • Ellipticals- the main mechanical repairs are noise-related that originate from the knocking and popping sounds from the different moving parts.  The repairs involve isolating the noise and tightening or replacing the worn parts and loose connector hardware. The primary electrical repair for ellipticals involves the brakes, which manifest as no resistance to high resistance. The brakes are controlled by a motor that requires regular replacement.
  • Exercise bikes –they are built like tanks. The most common mechanical repair involves pedals and cosmetic issues. On the other hand, the typical electrical repairs involve the motors and the brake setup
  • Others- tightening loose bench press and leg press, loosening stiff stepper machines, fixing broken pullies, and fixing dumbbell and barbell locks that are not working.

Fitness equipment is a conglomerate of different parts. All the parts must work properly to enhance the safety and efficiency of the equipment. Regular inspection and maintenance can reduce the overall cost and interval of the repairs. All the repairs should be done by a qualified technician who can detect potential hazards and track the performance of the fitness equipment.
