When Repair Is Not the Answer: A Precor Elliptical in Prosper

A homeowner in Prosper asked us to look at a Precor EFX 5.17i elliptical that had been damaged in a long-distance move. We found broken grips, a cracked console, scuffed shrouds and a missing power cord. Precor confirmed the model is obsolete and only the power cord is still available, third-party suppliers had nothing, and the owner chose to replace the machine instead.

What a long-distance move did to the machine

The owner showed our technician photos from loading day: the elliptical had gone onto the moving truck unprotected, with other items stacked on top of it. The owner’s main worry was the incline motor.

Our technician found damaged rubber grips, scratched and scuffed shrouds over the generator, a crack in the console around the screw that holds the tablet mount, and a bent and cracked section on the left edge of the console face. The power cord was missing, so the machine could not be powered on to test the incline or anything else.

Checking whether the parts still exist

Precor’s parts catalog listed only the power cord. A call to Precor confirmed why: the model is old enough to be obsolete, and every other damaged part is discontinued. Our technician also checked third-party parts suppliers, and none of them had the parts either.

The honest recommendation

We could have replaced the power cord and powered the machine up to test for more damage. But with the console, grips and shrouds unobtainable, the elliptical could never be fully repaired, and the owner decided to replace it rather than spend money on a partial fix.

Telling someone a repair is not worth doing is part of the job. Older home and commercial machines reach a point where the parts are gone, and it is better to know that before paying for work that will not hold.

Replacing it, new or used

When a machine has reached that point, replacing it is the repair.
